Groenkloof Trip Report - 09 May 2011
A nice little gentle day outing, OR SO WE THOUGHT. What is normally a two-hour trail turned into a somewhat longer one!
We all met up at the venue and set off after much confusion trying to read the somewhat obscure map. This area is steeped in history and has quite a good selection of game. Escape routes? Yes. Did we use them? NO, well not on the first obstacle where we did some serious "submarining" of vehicles, "STOCKIE" managed to get through, only just, with the water about to lap over the bonnet, but the Paj valiantly climbed out the other side, but minus a tyre having come off the rim!
Then Dave and Pat's turn, and they make very good submariners The water was up to seat level, with Dave valiantly striding around in his jeans up to his waist, Pat kneeling on the seat trying to bail, then gave up and had a "smoke" instead, she NEVER smokes in the car! Quite an interesting recovery to say the least, one very wet Cherokee, and VERY wet Pat and Dave!
Vehicle all good, and dried out nicely, well not the interior, much to Pat's annoyance who spent the rest of the day with a wet behind. More "nasties" which a few of the party did, but others chose to take the escape routes, very muddy and nasty sharp rocks, Andre's cruiser did a balancing act on one of the very steep step ledge ascents, but managed to get out of that one with the help of Felix, Robin and company, then we all joined up again and did the rest of the trail which was very pleasant with magnificent views over to the Voortrekker Monument.
Once back down the "mountain" some stayed on for a picnic and others went home due to shopping for kids' school uniforms, and work that hadn't been done due to the lengthy holidays. All in all a good fun day out, and home to a very hot shower. Shoes were all coated in mud, ditto clothes, a very grubby band of travellers even for those who did not get stuck the terrain under foot was very slippery, and difficult to keep your footing.
An ideal family venue, as they also have horse riding, off-road bike tracks, and a great kiddies play ground. The grounds and ablutions are in immaculate condition, the staff well informed and also very reasonably priced.
