Toyota Desert Race Update

In two weeks time, TDR 2011 will be over bar the cleaning up, but until then we would like to give you some more information.

Road construction is happening with gusto on many roads in Gaborone, so please note that when you come in from Tlokweng you will have road works all the way until you get to the centre of town so please allow extra time. If you are coming in via Romatswa, please drive carefully on the Lobatse road after you join it as they are widening the road from the Lion Park to Game City. The removal of the traffic circle at Pick 'n Pay is complete however.

Yellow Fever cards are being asked for if you have visited Zambia or Tanzania in the past three months.

DSP has seen some more improvements to accommodate this year's race. The best one is running water and this allows for better ablution facilities. On arrival please follow the marshals' directions so as not to interfere with the bikes and quads.

Traffic was a problem last year causing delays in accessing the DSP area and this has been addressed by the creation of a one-way pattern from the tar road to the public parking and out again using other roads. In addition we have improved another road (not advertised to the public) which can be accessed by travelling on the newly-widened Molepolole road (A12), past the Grand Palms and the Defence Force Barracks. 2,6kms after the entrance to the new Bogomotso Hospital look for YELLOW route marking stickers on the left and follow them to DSP. This route is 7 kilometres longer but we are sure will be quicker especially after the race each day and a GPS track can be downloaded from our web site.

The party is a local tradition dating back to when the race stayed out for the night but last year it overflowed onto the access road and, apart from the mess and sight of so many drunk people, it was the main cause of the traffic delays. This has been moved some 40 kilometres to the centre of the route and away from DSP, but there will still be the inevitable parties at the various local taverns and shebeens.

See you in Kumakwane!

Alan Reid
Chairman TDR and FWDCSA
