Woolridge moves up a rung
Rising star Lance Woolridge and experienced co-driver Ward Huxtable will campaign a factory Team Ford Ranger in the premier SP Class for the rest of the Absa Off Road Championship.
Woolridge and Huxtable will make their SP Class debut on the Toyota Dealer 400, round two of the Absa series, in Mpumalanga on April 8 and 9. In an ironic twist young Woolridge's father, former South African champion Neil, and Kenny Skjöldhammer won last year's race to give a diesel powered car a first win in the national off road series.
After a season in Class E and a lone Class D outing it represents a rapid rise through the ranks for Woolridge. The Pietermaritzburg teenager and Huxtable join current SA champions Chris Visser and Japie Badenhorst in the Ford Racing factory team.
"We had not planned to fast track Lance into the SP Class," said Woolridge senior, "but a set of circumstances have cropped up which have left us with no alternative. Circumstances also dictate there will obviously be a little extra pressure on him, but he is a sensible young guy and in Ward has a highly experienced campaigner to keep a lid on youthful exuberance.
"Lance has a long career ahead of him and, in the long run, it is probably better for him to move into the SP Class sooner than later. We are not expecting him to set the world alight, and he faces a huge learning curve."
The Ford challenge in Mpumalanga will be bolstered by two Free State based privateer teams. Kobus van Tonder and son-in-law Freddie Kriel will again be out in the Uni Freight Ford Ranger, with Louw de Bruin and Riaan Greyling in the Ruwacon Racing Ford Ranger.
The Donaldson Prologue to determine race start positions will start at 12:00 on April 8 at the Lydenburg Rugby Club. The race, to be run over three loops, will start at 08:30 at Lydenburg Toyota in the town centre.
Race headquarters and the designated service park will be at the Lydenburg Rugby Club and public access is free of charge. There is also no charge for public access to spectator points along the route, and spectator guides will be available at race headquarters and the start.
