Mathews/Smith Take Early Special Vehicle Championship Lead

A maiden national win on the Adenco 400 in the Western Cape, the opening round of the Absa Off Road Championship, has taken Colin Matthews and Alan Smith into an early lead in both the Special Vehicle and Class P championships.

After knocking on the door on previous occasions Matthews and Smith broke their duck, and became only the third Class P crew to take overall honours on a national championship race. The Century Racing pair came in ahead of two father and son combinations in Nick and Ryan Harper, in the Motorite BAT, and reigning South African champions Kallie and Quintin Sullwald in the Elegant Fuel BAT.

Reigning Class P champions Johan van Staden and James Rossouw, having their first Class A outing in the Atlas Copco BAT Spec 5, are fourth in the early overall standings ahead of KwaZulu-Natal crew Don Thomson and Wayne Foster (Zarco) who were the second Class P crew to finish in the top five on the Adenco event.

The Class A standings are headed by the Harper's ahead of the Sullwald's and van Staden and Rossouw. Botswana based Keith du Toit and Lesotho based Ashley Thorn (White Star Racing BAT) are fourth after a solid display in the Western Cape, with Shameer Variawa and Siegfried Rossouw fifth after a troubled debut in the Total Motorsport BAT.

Matthews and Smith head the Class P standings from Thomson and Foster and the husband and wife pairing of Marius and Jolinda Fourie in the BHP BAT. Former champions Johan and Etienne Bezuidenhout, reunited in the Adenco BAT, and Archie Rutherford and Mike Lawrenson (Regent Racing Jimco) are fourth and fifth.

There was another maiden win in the Western Cape for early Class B leaders Keith Makenete and debutant co-driver Letlatsa Lehana in a Zarco. They ground out a win ahead of veteran Wolf-Peter Pfumfei in a single-seater WPP.

As is to be expected after only one race the points positions are close. The Adenco 400 has, however, provided a pointer towards the rest of the season with a number of more fancied teams among early season under achievers.

The next event on the Absa Off Road Championship calendar is the Toyota Dealer 400 in Lydenburg on 8 and 9 April.
